Case Study - British Telecom, UK

British Telecom, one of the world's leading providers of information and communications technology solutions relies on highly accurate iris recognition technology to ensure verified access to their most valued information in the midst of implementing Project 21st Century Network.

Project Background:

BT's $169m flagship international data centre in Cardiff Bay is a symbol of the company's commitment to its future as the partner of choice for businesses seeking information and communications technology (ICT) solutions. Employing the next generation of communications infrastructure, it is designed to provide the highly sophisticated solutions demanded by growing number of innovative companies and entrepreneurial businesses around the world. The Cardiff facility comprises three, 10,000 sq ft data halls capable of hosting 12,000 servers and 30,000 sq ft of office space with a capacity for 300 highly trained support staff to manage the requirements of BT's customers world-wide.

Solution Overview:

The need for an interruption-free network and data storage solution has led to a growing requirement for 'self-management' style services such as telehousing and co-location. Such an approach allows customers or their authorized agents to have hands on management responsibility for their hardware and applications while taking advantage of BT's security and reliable multi-level redundant operation. One issue though is authentication of authorized personnel. The size of an operation going 24/7 on behalf of many customers makes it impossible to know each one. BT, therefore, elected to utilize LG's IrisAccess™ platform based iris recognition solution to ensure authentication and privileges of all customers.

Result and Benefits:

Since its installation in early 2003, the LG IrisAccess™ has not only been a vital component of BT's access control system, but also an integral part of its overall information technology capabilities and disaster recovery strategy. The customers continue to manage both their hardware and applications, whilst benefiting from BT's resilience and high levels of security. Lastly, BT employees readily accepted the IrisAccess™3000, and continue to enjoy the convenience of accurate and quick positive authentication. New hires are enrolled in the system, and those who wear glasses or contact lenses have not encountered any enrolment or authentication difficulties.
